I haven't really witnessed alliances like the author talks about, usually it's cliques. Cliques are different from alliances in that alliances on last until the "battle" is over. Cliques are about friends. The only "alliances" I've seen are in dodge ball. But i have been teased by cliques many times.
I hate getting teased, i don't think anyone DOES like being teased. It's very demoralizing. This is what makes most people at school self conscious. It's certainly what makes me self conscious. In this kind of situation you don't really have any options but ignore them or tease back. Comebacks. You shouldn't need to use them but when a teasing battle begins, you have to. Things shouldn't need to escalate.
I think people bully others because of their own insecurities. They feel bad about themselves so they go and take it out on others. It makes them feel better, and they think it makes them look "cool" in front of their friends.
